Pickleball Paddle Care: Edge Tape, Overgrips & Cleaning Basics

Looking after a pickleball paddle does not take much. A few minutes now and then keeps the edge neat, the grip comfortable and the face clean. Here is a simple routine for recreational players, with links to the accessories we sell for each step.

1. Protect the edge with guard tape

Paddles get scraped on the court when you scoop low balls or tap the ground between points. Edge guard tape is a strip that folds over the frame so the tape takes those scrapes instead of the paddle edge.

  • When to add it: on a new paddle, or when the original edge guard starts to peel or chip.
  • How to apply: wipe the edge clean and dry, start near the handle, press the tape on in small sections and smooth it as you go, keeping an even margin on both faces.
  • Check the fit: measure your paddle's edge thickness before you buy. The edge guard tape in our pickleball starter accessory kit is a 28 mm wide TPU strip made for paddles with a 16 mm edge.

2. Refresh the handle with an overgrip

An overgrip is a thin wrap that goes over the paddle's existing grip. It adds a little cushioning and is easy to replace, so the base grip underneath is not the part that wears.

  • When to change it: when it starts to feel slick or looks worn. How often depends on how much you play.
  • How to wrap: start at the butt of the handle, keep light tension, overlap each turn slightly and finish with the finishing strip.
  • Handle size: each layer adds a little thickness, so players with smaller hands may prefer just one layer.

The starter accessory kit includes three perforated PU overgrips (75 × 2.5 cm each) in black with white stitching, so you have spares ready.

3. Clean the paddle face

Dust and ball residue build up on the hitting surface over time. A clean face looks better and makes it easier to spot wear.

  • After play: wipe the face with a slightly damp cloth and let it air dry.
  • For build-up: a rubber paddle eraser, like the one in our starter accessory kit, can help lift dirt and residue from textured faces. Rub gently with even pressure, then brush away the crumbs. Test a small area first if you are unsure about your paddle's surface.
  • Avoid: harsh chemicals, scouring pads and leaving the paddle in a hot car.

4. Pick up balls without bending

Not strictly paddle care, but handy: a silicone ball retriever slides onto the butt end of a standard paddle handle, so you can press it over a ball and lift it to your hand. The starter accessory kit includes two.

5. Store it well

Keep your paddle in a cover or a sports bag between games so it does not get knocked around with keys and water bottles. A bag with a paddle sleeve also keeps balls, overgrips and a towel in one place.
